South Asian victims of domestic abuse to take to the runway for International Women's Day

In it’s much anticipated annual return on 8th March, (International Women’s Day); The Fashion Brunch, established by Anisha Vasani, Creative Director, has yet again proved consistent with it’s execution of celebrating women with challenged differences. The Fashion Brunch has extraordinarily deviated from the established norms of fashion shows and beauty pageants, congregating women from different backgrounds and faiths, empowering them to be proud of their diverseness.

With the IWD 2025 theme ‘Accelerate Action’, the runway spotlight will be succeeded by 9 incredibly brave women - survivors of domestic violence, mental, sexual and emotional abuse - inspiring others with their resilience. The women will exhibit stunning designs by Nikaza Asian Couture and House of Rani, complemented by exquisite jewellery from Meraki Jewels and Jewels by MK. The ladies will be sharing inspirational and powerful stories about their challenges, struggles and courage. There are many concerning issues affecting the South Asian community. Cultural factors, such as stigma, shame, and fear of community isolation, often discouraging South Asian women from reporting abuse.

A recent study in 2021 revealed that 48% of South Asian respondents reported experiencing physical abuse, with women disproportionately affected. Important to also note that these statistics may not fully capture the extent of domestic abuse within the community. By breaking the silence surrounding domestic abuse, we can all work towards fostering a supportive environment for victims to speak out and receive the assistance they need.

Amongst the incredible survival stories is that of Sandy Phgura, a Mindset Coach. Sharan Dhillon, Founder of Amorfia Makeup. Rupi Dhillon, an Empowerment and Spiritual Guide. Nina Aouilk, Life Coach and Founder of the End Honour Killings Charity. Dr Celeste Aouilk - Jaiyeola. All of whom endured some form of psychological, mental, verbal, emotional or sexual abuse, courageously sharing their experiences. All standing together, demonstrating resilience and inspiring others in the fight to end abuse. United under the campaign ‘Sisters of Strength - United to End Abuse’, they reaffirm their unwavering commitment to ending domestic violence and empowering survivors. “Sisters of strength required numerous voices to come together as a collective to show that sisterhood can combat gender based domestic violence and abuse – Nina Aouilk, survivor and spokesperson for the supported Charity ‘End Honour Killings’.

This year, our supporting charity partner is KindheART. Run by 5 female volunteers, KindheART has been changing lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged women and children in UK, Kenya and India since 2017. “We’re a small charity trying to make a big difference. Over 80% of our work is with vulnerable and orphaned children and young women who are from the slums and the streets, trafficked or have been abandoned and suffered abuse. We are very proud to be nominated by The Fashion Brunch this year as their nominated charity in such a prestigious annual event.” said Alka Shah, Trustee KindheART Charity.
